Structural Editing
The big edit! This is a super intense, holistic deep dive into your novel’s structure. I’ll approach it from every angle, zooming out to a bird’s eye view to assess your plotting beats, getting in the weeds with you to scrutinise the pacing between chapters, or the protagonist’s likeability (for example).
You’ve completed or nearly completed the first draft of your novel, but you feel lost in the woods when it comes to bigger picture elements: structure, plotting, pacing, character development, or the general ‘pageturning’ quality of your fiction.
You’ll receive a large volume (circa 12, 000 - 15,00 words) of intensive editorial feedback, including praise for what’s working, honest feedback on what needs work, and actionable suggestions for how to improve it (using human creativity only - no regurgitated ChatGPT content here!) Forefront of my mind will be preparing your book for the eyes of an author or literary agent, and making it as pageturning as it can be. We can also pinpoint your book’s Unique Selling Point, to make it stand out in the market. As well as the editorial feedback report, this service also includes a ‘book map’ which breaks down your novel’s arcs, acts and plot beats chapter-by-chapter, thorough commentary on your manuscript (praising what’s good, aiming to fix what needs work), five hours’ of video calls and unlimited follow-up answers to questions.
I know this is a frustrating answer, but rate varies depending on the requirements of the individual project. You’re welcome to send me a sample of your writing via my contact form - if I think we’re a good fit, I’ll get back to you with free editorial thoughts and a quote.
Editorial Assessment
This is a good option if your budget can’t stretch to the developmental edit, or you want a quick and efficient summary of where your book’s strengths lie and how to make it better.
You’ve completed or nearly completed the first draft of your novel, but you feel lost in the woods when it comes to bigger picture elements: structure, plotting, pacing, character development, or the general ‘pageturning’ quality of your fiction.
You’ll receive a report of between 3k-5k of thoughtful, actionable feedback on your book (praising the good, offering strategic suggestions for how you can solve the areas that need work) and two follow-up video calls with me to talk it through. The biggest difference between this service and the developmental edit is that it doesn’t include margin comments on the manuscript.
Rates begin at £0.015 per word.
Line Editing
A detail-orientated look at your novel on a sentence- and word- level, with the goal of enhancing your style and voice. I solve issues like clunky phrasing and tonal shifts, enhance flow, clarity, and word choice, passages that could flow better, and so on. I focus on improving your book stylistically, helping you to develop your craft as a writer and brush up on any areas you struggle with.
You’re happy with the bigger picture of your story. The plot and characters are locked in place, and it’s time to zoom into the details. Enter the line edit, a service designed to bring publishing polish. Elevating your writing style while maintaining your unique voice is at the forefront of my mind.
Stylistic edits in your manuscript (direct changes and comments), addressing all of these: style, clarity, sentence cadence and sequencing, word choice, character voice consistency, effectiveness of sentence-level narrative in producing desired effect (e.g. suspense/emotion/catharsis), sensitivity issues, awkward phrasing or cliche, grammar, syntax.
